The scene transitions to Shrek having grown into an embittered adult ogre who lives contentedly alone in his beloved swamp. Shrek’s parents warn him that because of his appearance, he will be shunned by the world and an angry mob will be the last thing he sees when he takes his final breath. The story begins when a young Shrek is sent out of the house by his ogre parents to make his own way in the world. This musical has become a crowd favorite among for scholastic and community theatre groups for its catchy music, comical script, and themes of being who you are. Shrek The Musical follows the titular character on his quest to get his beloved swamp back from the clutches of the fairytale hating and vertically-challenged Lord Farquaad. With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical is based on the 2001 DreamWorks Animation film and combines elements from the sequels, Shrek 2 and Shrek Forever After, plus William Steig’s 1990 book, Shrek!. Shrek the Musical opened on Broadway in December 2008 and was then followed by a national tour around the United States in 2010.
